Howdy!
The fifth paragraph of this article stated "The first exhibition of artist postage stamps occurred in 1974 in Canada." Which led me to this website. And then this article. And then finally, Tui Tui.
I'm obviously going to have to learn a lot more about stamp art and artists' stamps.

It'll be interesting to see if they ever show it in Montreal.

I'm late on this one, but I'm slowly catching up, I promise. Last week an Agnes Martin painting [pdf alert] didn't hit the minimum, at Sotheby's (although this one did) nor did a Jeff Wall photograph when it went up for sale at Christie's.

Since the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal seems to be showing only rented shows for the foreseeable future, this is one I'd like them to pick up... and don't they already have an established relationship with The Hermitage?

Well it looks like we will finally get rid of the execrable exhibit Bodies. Bodies is execrable because they did not get permission to exhibit the corpses, they just bought them (possibly in bulk and at a discount) from the Chinese government. In its place they will be exhibiting some large-scale advertisement for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
What makes me giggle is that the company that is organizing this advertisement for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader also organizes exhibits for The American Backflow Prevention Association, The Tortilla Industry Association, and on the very same weekend they are doing both the Conference for Catholic Facility Management and The Jewish Community Centers Association Biennial Conference.

Or even more succinctly, he's awesome. But due to what sounds to me like a bunch of Keystone Kop-like antics, he's going to Rikers for slightly less than a year.

Instead of only being an outlet for my rambles and rants about things artistic in Montreal, I'm also adding news and other information about art and artists in Montréal, Québec and the rest of Canada, for the most part stuff that is not covered by the mainstream press.
One of my favorite things about this new focus, is that it enable me to highlight things like this: Québec Hebdo, the free weekly distributed by Transcontinental in Québec City has a 700+ word article on Dolorès Plourde Duong - or more bluntly and plainly an article about 40% longer and bigger than any article/review/preview about an an artist in the mainstream press.

Howdy!
A new section, upcoming vernissages that you might want to go to. For the blokes and Squareheads in the house, a vernissage is the Québecois synonym for an art opening. The word vernissage comes from varnishing. In the 18th century (or earlier) when most painting was done in oil. Once a painting was done, it needed to be varnished, but then as now, varnishing was an extremely boring and tedious job. So, according to the story that I heard, a painter would bribe his friends to help him varnish his paintings, by offering them wine.
A little bit of wine, some friends, some varnish and Voilà! Instant Party.
The First One:
Gaétan Bouchard's exhibit Simplement dans ma cour is opening on May 15 at 1756 St-Olivier in Trois-Rivières.
And the Second One:
« Fire » at Ecto (880 Roy E, 3rd floor) with Fabesko, Peter Gibson, Carole Guevin, Tanya Johnston, Élise Lafontaine, Jaber Lutfi, Frédérick Ouellet, Marie Sylvestre and Nathalie Trépanier on May 27 at 17h.
