I normally don't like putting a spotlight on specific art blogs, just because it has the potential to increase the number of emails I receive every day. Exponentially. But despite the potential danger, I quite like and enjoy Edith Rey's blog, called doreyme and Kiera Pannel's, called This is Art. mail art seven days a week.
Full Disclosure: Edith is a good friend and Kiera lives around the corner from me.

Running an Art Gallery in Milwaukee sounds like it is the same as running an Art Gallery in Montreal
Howdy!
First off, I gotta thank Stefan Zebrowski-Rubin, prior to him becoming a guest blogger at Art21 I kinda, sorta just scanned the headlines of their blog. But now I've actually started reading them, and boy-oh-boy am I glad I did. They have a new guest blogger, Mike Brenner, and he is writing about his experiences running Hotcakes, an art gallery in Milwaukee.
For those of you out of the loop, I used to run an art gallery here in Montreal called Zeke's Gallery, and while all of Mike's experiences aren't the exact same as my experiences, they are pretty gosh darn similar, and it doesn't hurt that he knows how to write as well.
I'm looking forward to his future entries...

Man that's a mouthful; "Stefan Zebrowski-Rubin on Rafael Lozano-Hemmer," but I won't get into Quebec civil law here. However of all the artists in Montreal I'd be hard pressed to name one whose art I appreciate more than Mr. Lozano-Hemmer. Mr. Zebrowski-Rubin did a kick-ass interview with him on the Art21 blog last week.
And since I like being comprehensive, there's also Mr. Zebrowski-Rubin's post on Vida Simon (and artist I was previously unaware of). So if you're keeping score at home that makes five artists I knew of and three that I didn't in Mr. Zebrowski-Rubin's series on art in Montreal. 62.5% not bad if I can say so myself given how many artists there are here...

Ok, I'm going to have to start playing catch up, not only had I never heard of Jenny Schade before Stefan wrote about her, but I almost missed his post on the Art21 blog about her (something about Fridays I guess). Looks like I'm going to have to track her down.
Adad Hannah on the other hand is a very known quantity. But as usual, Stefan writes about him and his work very eloquently and clearly.

Surprise, surprise!! I'd never heard of Yves Médam before Stefan's interview with him on the Art21 blog but back in 2003 Zeke's Gallery exhibited the photography of James St. Laurent and their work is pretty gosh darn similar.
However me 'n' The Kokoromi Collective go way back... but Stefan's post about them is informative, entertaining and educational.

Unfortunately I can't embed it, so you have to click here to watch it. 13 silent minutes from 1939 that are more like home movies than what we would recognize as biographies - more like black and white portraits that are not still. Mostly on Rodolphe Duguay and Horatio Walker but Clarence Gagnon and Ozias Leduc make cameo appearances as well.

Yes, I know it has nothing to do with art in Canada, Quebec or Montreal. But gosh darn it, I like Edward Hopper's work.
But don't go getting all excited and making plans to travel down to Washington DC, somehow they just published the video on Art Babble, despite the show itself having been closed for more than two years.
And upon doing some more digging, there's a whole lot more...

A local artist, Pierre Pivet made 12 paintings of retired Canadiens players. Those paintings were transformed into limited edition silkscreen prints (875 of them) each set in a velour slipcase on arches paper.
[Insert obligatory "Ooooooooh" here]
If Danielle Caron and Galerie MX succeed in selling all of them, a bunch of people get to split $2,620,625. Or if you prefer $218,385.42 per painting.

A press release from the city about how have hired five 'graffiteurs' last weekend to paint the Van Horne viaduct (why not a chicken?). The only problem being, that they name the DJ who will be playing tunes, but there is no mention of the names of the artists. Hmmm...

Richard McClintock, two years less a day
Howdy!
I'm not quite certain how to interpret this, but Richard McClintock got sentenced to two years in prison, less one day after being found guilty of forging a bunch of paintings.
The reason I am uncertain has everything to do with the nature of the reporting. In yesterday's Le Soleil, Guy Benjamin writes that he forged 90 paintings by more than 20 different painters, and that an art collector from Toronto spent $600 thinking they were getting a bargain.
But back in January, Sylvain Trépanier from the Journal du Quebec wrote that the 90 paintings had a value of $1,500,000, or about $17,000/each. And that he was being accused of selling two fake Marcel Barbeau paintings for $3,500/each.
Richard Hénault of Le Soleil wrote last January that McClintock forged 73 paintings by 25 different artists, but didn't mention prices or value.
Éric Thibault of the Journal du Quebec also writes about 73 paintings by 25 different artists, however he does mention certain details, such as the names of two galleries, who I presume bought the fake Barbeau's: Galerie Aux Maîtres Anciens and Galerie L'Art Ancien.
Rene Bruemmer, writing in The Gazette, mentions selling two paintings to unnamed Montreal art galleries at a price of $25,000/each, and increases the total amount of forged paintings to 80.
At some point I'm going to have to go find the judgment and corresponding documents and perhaps talk to someone involved with the Sûreté du Québec's équipe d’enquête sur les crimes en matière d’œuvres d’art if I want to get to the bottom of this and figure out what really happened.
[Update a couple of hours later: In Germany, Petra Kujau, was fined $380,000 this week and given a two-year suspended sentence for selling 300 fake forgeries! - via Museum Security Network]

Tom Wesselmann coming to the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal

It is a good thing I read the fine print. According to Steven Rosen of Cincinnati's City Beat (their equivalent of the Montreal Mirror) we're going to be getting a major retrospective on the art of Tom Wesselmann. My guess would be fall 2011 or winter 2012.
But what a difference a museum director makes. With the previous director, Guy Cogeval, the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal collaborated on major retrospectives with other museums like The Hermitage and the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Now it does deals with places (no dis-respect intended) like the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (did you know that Cincinnati isn't even the largest town in Ohio? And Richmond isn't the largest town in Virginia, either)

Came across this listing. Some red flags were waving and I figured I would share them here. A) Why is the smaller painting more expensive? B) In the same way that you wouldn't buy a used car without having a mechanic give it complete check-up, don't buy art without having someone familiar with the artist's work authenticate it (complete with guarantee) and C) definitely meet the seller in person and face-to-face so that you can see if the paintings are damaged in any way.

Last Friday David Franklin, the now ex-deputy director and chief curator at the National Gallery got named head honcho at the Cleveland Museum Art. While the Cleveland Museum Art is most definitely head, hands and shoulders above the National Gallery, I'm not so certain that I would say the same thing about Cleveland vs. Ottawa, although it truly is in my mind a battle for the bottom.
The Wall Street Journal's take, ArtInfo.com mentions the 2008 tempest in a teapot about some deleted emails, and the rest of the articles about the appointment via Google News.

Nathalie Petrowski is wrong, wrong, and wrong
Howdy!
I'm just about caught up with my backlog, woo-hoo! It obviously was a slow news day on Tuesday, because Nathalie Petrowski wrote about a decision that Hydro-Quebec made, like, in May or something. basically they have decided to go anti-art and have stopped spending the approximately $200K/year that they used to on Quebecois art.
Ms. Petrowski parrots the party line of AGAC (and I would presume RAAV, and all the other arts organizations) and laments the fact that they have, quote, unquote, stopped buying art.
First of all, I would presume that Hydro-Quebec has stopped buying art as much as they have stopped buying desks and chairs. For tax purposes, here in Quebec (and Canada) art is considered to be like furniture, and I can't imagine that some newly minted associate vice-president of raping and pillaging virgin forest is going to accept a hand me down desk, nor do I think that said VP would accept someone else's aesthetic choices on the walls of their office. I could imagine that Hydro-Quebec has stopped buying art in the organized fashion that they used to, quite possibly because they either want to get rid of their curator, or he is retiring or some other internal political reason like that.
Secondly, if all they used to spend was a piddly $200,000, then in my eyes, they were bring Quebecois art down, and keeping it down. Yes, in the 60s, 70s, and 80s getting your work in the Hydro-Quebec art collection was quite the feather in your hat. But these days, $200K doesn't go as far as it used to. And I would go so far as to venture that Quebecois Art would be better served by being forced to find better buyers.
Sort of similar to that first time when you say to your mom, "I'd love to sell you this painting as well, but in actual fact there is someone else out there who likes it and is willing to pay three times what I would sell it to you for. Yes, I love you mom, but at some point the apron strings need to be broken."

CTV Montreal goes to the Laurentians for the first time

Maya Johnson doesn't do much research. While it is all fine and dandy (actually really good) to cover the Route des Arts on TV, and she probably made an awful lot of people very happy, her first sentence (the lede) is A unique open-air exhibit is giving art lovers a chance to tour the Laurentians, while some artists display their work in makeshift galleries in their own rural backyards.
Ummm, (Memphrémagog, Saint-Plantaire) unique my eye.

Earlier this month the Institut de la statistique du Québec and the Observatoire de la culture et des communications du Québec came out with Attendance Figures at Québec Museums in 2009. Back in April, The Art Newspaper came out with Exhibition and museum attendance figures 2009 [pdf alert].
I have a couple of questions: 1. What does the Québec government do that requires an extra four months? 2. Why didn't the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal tell the government that in fact the Robert Polidori exhibit was Polidori along with Christine Davis and Spring Hurlbut as they did to the Art Newspaper? And 3. Why doesn't the Musée de la civilisation report to the Art Newspaper as well? (If Egypt: the Great Civilisation can make the Top 30, then I would imagine that Fascinantes Momies d’Égypte should be on the list as well.)

Better art reporting in Dolbeau-Mistassini than in Montreal

I've long since stopped reading Voir for their art reporting. But now it has officially becomeridiculous downright horrifying. Two articles; one in Voir on the Femmes artistes, la conquête d'un espace, 1900-1965 exhibit at the Musée d'art de Joliette is 295 words long - or barely enough for the title, the name of the museum, curator and some of the artists. The second article is on an exhibit of the 40 most recent paintings by Harold Savard in Dolbeau-Mistassini, it is 87% longer.

I recently changed my radio listening habits, and the way that Radio-Canada deals with things is a breath of fresh air in comparison to what I used to listen to. Which is a short preamble to the reporting from Haiti that Stéphanie Lapointe did every week on AM. A couple of weeks ago she spoke about art in, during and for the reconstruction of Haiti (I'm still playing catch up with things). It doesn't quite get as much airtime as dance does on AM, but then again Ms. Lapointe did have a regular gig every week.. If you'd like to hear all 9:22 of it, click here.

The Real Montreal vs. The Montreal Michel Rabagliati drew

I copped this one from the Drawn & Quarterly blog, but it was too good to just keep to myself.
Michel Rabagliati (the cartoonist behind Paul en appartement, Paul à la pêche, etc.) gets the grand treatment from L'actualité. Christian Blais takes a bunch (15 pages!) of photographs of the places that Rabagliati drew, even better than before and after pix!! Plus there is commentary by Rabagliati as well.

I can't call it conflict of interest, because M. Péan points it out all over the place that he works for Radio-Canada, but there is still something that makes me uneasy about him calling attention to the We Want Miles show at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal and the audio tour produced by Radio-Canada in parallel with the exhibit.
I think it has to do with him not adding anything of significance. Basically all he says is that 15 listeners joined him on a tour of the exhibition (how's that as a statement on the power of Radio-Canada) and ain't it cool that there is this audio guide.
But then again, I could just be in a lousy mood and looking for someone to pick on...

Who can resist a title like "Curatorial Smackdown II"? Not I. Gallery Lambton in Sarnia is in the process of mounting its second curatorial competition. What I find interesting about the project is that its blog attempts to document the way curatorial decisions are made—and exhibitions built—in a relatively straightforward way: from wall preparation to selection of works to framing and beyond. While the blog can't rival UFC for smackdown sensations, it certainly is a handy learning tool. Take a look and keep an eye out for the second half of this round coming up August 3, 4 and 5.

Great Idea, Horrible Website
Howdy!
Since I'm no longer a teenager, and don't live at home, I missed to call out for the CCA's week long day camp.
But it appears to me that one of the results of the camp was this website. Which I doubt is even navigable to a contemporary teenager. Which is not to say that the content that it hides is not good, just that it is hidden.
Things like a review of Viger Square by Gervais Nash, a great video by Félix Bouchard, and a bunch of other pieces that are probably just as brilliant and wonderful, but completely and utterly hidden in plain site due to bad website design.

Adad Hannah in Connecticut

Congrats need to be extended to Mr. Hannah, he's getting closer to making it in New York City. This past spring he had a show at the Aldrich Museum. As far as I can tell, Benjamin Ivry wrote the only review in the Arty-Semite, but there also is an hour long video of him talking.
