Sometimes I agree with Clarence Epstein

When he states things like "that art is inseparable from the intellectual life at Concordia" and cataloging all the art at Concordia University he is dead bang on. But, there are other things that he does that I strongly disagree with.

Vera Frenkel in Canadian Art Magazine

I spoke with Vera Frenkel back in November. And now the show gets a write up in Canadian Art Magazine.
I can't call 434 words a review, and it truth it reads more like a rehash of the press release, than anything critical.

Moshe Safdie at (and on) the National Gallery
Howdy!
Someone at the National Gallery needs to learn how to use YouTube better. They have posted 12 short videos of Moshe Safdie talking about the building. Twice. Because they have an English account called ngcmedia and a French account called mbacmedia. However the videos uploaded to the French account are in English. And they have no playlist, and because they have chosen to title them Tour of the National Gallery of Canada with Moshe Safdie and then specify which part of the building they are, at first glance it seems like they are all the same. Which could go a long way to explaining why they have all been viewed in the low two figures (that or someone over there forgot to send out the email, tweet and update their Facebook page).
I think they should hire me as their social media consultant. And if you're interested, the complete collection of videos are all below.
Tour of the National Gallery of Canada with Moshe Safdie "The Building"
"The Concourse"
"The Contemporary Gallery"
"The Cafeteria"
"The Garden Court"
"The Great Hall"
"The Light Shafts"
"The Port Holes"
"The Turquoise Wall"
"The Ventilation"
"The Water Court"
And what's with all the quotation marks?

Things are not good with Jean-Paul Riopelle
Howdy!
Some place in Winnipeg called Mayberry Fine Art is doing its darnedest to blur the line between what I would call Real Fine Art™ and Complete & Utter Crap™, and they're doing so with the help of Yseult Riopelle, Jean-Paul Riopelle's daughter, author of the Catalogue Raisonne
, and keeper of Jean-Paul Riopelle's artistic legacy.
My best guess would be that someone needs some money.
Basically, what they doing is casting some things in bronze, calling them "sculptural gems" and trying to sell them for prices ranging from $39,000 to $750,000. If you have been under a rock for the past eight years, Jean-Paul Riopelle died in 2002, making it sort of difficult for him to make any art, recently. And that's why I would consider them Complete & Utter Crap™. Implying, or allowing someone to infer that these are sculptures made by Jean-Paul Riopelle is a fabrication worthy of Mother Goose or the Brothers Grimm.
Apparently they exhibited them someplace in Paris and are taking them on tour through Canada. If you'd like to read the press release, do so right here. They don't mention how many copies were cast, which leaves the possibility that the next time someone needs some cash all they have to do is cast some more statues. And don't even get me started on the drawings that they're trying to sell as well.

Audiotopie is, as they write, an artist collective that combines architecture, landscape architecture, new media and electro-acoustic music. They come out with a bunch of audioguides (for lack of a better term) based around metro stations. I've only had the opportunity to hear one (on the Saint Laurent metro station) and unfortunately it promised more than it delivered.

Why do I have to go to Ottawa to find out about art in Montreal?
Howdy!
OK, I won't bust The Ottawa Citizen's chops that the exhibit is really taking place in Westmount and not Montreal, but if de Bellefeuille is sending out press releases, you'd kind of, sort of think that something local would pick up on it first.
And yes, I know I'm five days late on the news, but a) I've been busy and b) this ain't a primary news source (or at least it shouldn't be one).

Rémy Couture going to court tomorrow
Howdy!
Québec is fast becoming a less appealing place to live. After reading this, the only reason I can think of to stay is that it is worse elsewhere.
To back up a little, Rémy Couture, is a special effects artist for film. He made some films of his own. He got busted by the RCMP last year. His case is finally making it to trial tomorrow.
His ordeal has made it into the local French press (La Presse, Journal de Montreal, Journal de Québec, Le Devoir, Mario Dumont, and while I usually totally and completely disagree and dislike anything Richard Martineau does, this time I agree with him)
But where is the rest of the press? The Montreal Gazette? The Montreal Mirror? The Hour? CTV Montreal? CBC? Or do they think somehow that that a French artist being busted isn't worth the trouble to report?
If you want to read more try these on for size:
InnerDepravity, the website which got Rémy Couture busted.
The Facebook page supporting him.
The Rémy Couture website.
And documentingreality.com and neogaf.com forums
[Edit 20h: He was also on Christiane Charette this morning.]

I normally don't like putting a spotlight on specific art blogs, just because it has the potential to increase the number of emails I receive every day. Exponentially. But despite the potential danger, I quite like and enjoy Edith Rey's blog, called doreyme and Kiera Pannel's, called This is Art. mail art seven days a week.
Full Disclosure: Edith is a good friend and Kiera lives around the corner from me.
So yeah, if you live around the corner and are a good friend, email me to ask if I can write about your art blog.

La galerie d’art Jules Harvey is closing
Howdy!
It is always sad news when an art gallery closes, this is made even more poignant when it is a gallery that has been in business for more than 40 years. You can read more about it here.

Running an Art Gallery in Milwaukee sounds like it is the same as running an Art Gallery in Montreal
Howdy!
First off, I gotta thank Stefan Zebrowski-Rubin, prior to him becoming a guest blogger at Art21 I kinda, sorta just scanned the headlines of their blog. But now I've actually started reading them, and boy-oh-boy am I glad I did. They have a new guest blogger, Mike Brenner, and he is writing about his experiences running Hotcakes, an art gallery in Milwaukee.
For those of you out of the loop, I used to run an art gallery here in Montreal called Zeke's Gallery, and while all of Mike's experiences aren't the exact same as my experiences, they are pretty gosh darn similar, and it doesn't hurt that he knows how to write as well.
I'm looking forward to his future entries...

Stefan Zebrowski-Rubin on Rafael Lozano-Hemmer & Vida Simon
Howdy!
Man that's a mouthful; "Stefan Zebrowski-Rubin on Rafael Lozano-Hemmer," but I won't get into Quebec civil law here. However of all the artists in Montreal I'd be hard pressed to name one whose art I appreciate more than Mr. Lozano-Hemmer. Mr. Zebrowski-Rubin did a kick-ass interview with him on the Art21 blog last week.
And since I like being comprehensive, there's also Mr. Zebrowski-Rubin's post on Vida Simon (and artist I was previously unaware of). So if you're keeping score at home that makes five artists I knew of and three that I didn't in Mr. Zebrowski-Rubin's series on art in Montreal. 62.5% not bad if I can say so myself given how many artists there are here...

Meeting of the Styles is now Can You Rock
Howdy!
and it merely took them three weeks to get their promo video done... Guess I'm going to have to get down to Saint Patrick street to see what they did.

Stefan Zebrowski-Rubin on Jenny Schade and Adad Hannah
Howdy!
Ok, I'm going to have to start playing catch up, not only had I never heard of Jenny Schade before Stefan wrote about her, but I almost missed his post on the Art21 blog about her (something about Fridays I guess). Looks like I'm going to have to track her down.
Adad Hannah on the other hand is a very known quantity. But as usual, Stefan writes about him and his work very eloquently and clearly.

Stefan Zebrowski-Rubin on Yves Médam and The Kokoromi Collective
Howdy!
Surprise, surprise!! I'd never heard of Yves Médam before Stefan's interview with him on the Art21 blog but back in 2003 Zeke's Gallery exhibited the photography of James St. Laurent and their work is pretty gosh darn similar.
However me 'n' The Kokoromi Collective go way back... but Stefan's post about them is informative, entertaining and educational.

It almost makes me want to move to Indianapolis
Howdy!
No matter how much I get a kick out of seeing a promo video for the Association of Art Museum Directors 2010 Annual Meeting (especially since Marc Mayer has a starring role!), three months to edit and post is about two and a half months too long.
Good thing, as I really don't want to move to Indianapolis...

Stefan Zebrowski-Rubin on Shelley Miller and Paul Warne
Howdy!
Last week, over at Art21, Stefan Zebrowski-Rubin was the guest blogger.
I figured I'd wait a little bit and let the hubbub die down a little bit before posting links to what he wrote. So you'll be getting two/day for the rest of the week. And if you couldn't tell, I think they are fabulous, wonderful and amazing.

Also, if you're interested, this is the interview I did with Shelley Miller back in 2009.

OK, I'll jump on the bandwagon
Howdy!
But only because it is hilarious!
If you want to see the original version, or the 'long' version click appropriately.
I gotta thank whomever wrote this article about Stephen Harper's political strategy in Québec for cluing me in.

Armand Vaillancourt is God!
Howdy!
I'm not quite certain who or what infodimanche.com is, but I thank them from the bottom of my heart, as their brief blurb on Armand Vaillancourt reminded me of this two part interview he did earlier this year on CIBL. Part One, Part Two.

Linda Covit and Marie-Claude Séguin getting respect in the rest of the world
Howdy!
I have yet to walk up them, but Linda Covit & Marie-Claude Séguin's Give Peace A Chance stairs got a very nice write up/picture show in Arch Daily on Tuesday.

Quatre Artistes Canadiens, a film by Albert Tessier
Howdy!
Unfortunately I can't embed it, so you have to click here to watch it. 13 silent minutes from 1939 that are more like home movies than what we would recognize as biographies - more like black and white portraits that are not still. Mostly on Rodolphe Duguay and Horatio Walker but Clarence Gagnon and Ozias Leduc make cameo appearances as well.

More on Richard McClintock
Howdy!
Douglas Quan talks to Bonnie Czegledi because she has an article being published in next month's Canadian Criminal Law Review about Art Crimes, although the sentencing of Richard McClintock didn't hurt either. All that appears are a bunch of cliches.

Edward Hopper's New York at the National Gallery of Art, Washington
Howdy!
Yes, I know it has nothing to do with art in Canada, Quebec or Montreal. But gosh darn it, I like Edward Hopper's work.
But don't go getting all excited and making plans to travel down to Washington DC, somehow they just published the video on Art Babble, despite the show itself having been closed for more than two years.
And upon doing some more digging, there's a whole lot more...

How many ways can you split $2,620,625?
Howdy!
A local artist, Pierre Pivet made 12 paintings of retired Canadiens players. Those paintings were transformed into limited edition silkscreen prints (875 of them) each set in a velour slipcase on arches paper.
[Insert obligatory "Ooooooooh" here]
If Danielle Caron and Galerie MX succeed in selling all of them, a bunch of people get to split $2,620,625. Or if you prefer $218,385.42 per painting.

A press release from the city about how have hired five 'graffiteurs' last weekend to paint the Van Horne viaduct (why not a chicken?). The only problem being, that they name the DJ who will be playing tunes, but there is no mention of the names of the artists. Hmmm...
