Slow News Day at A Portrait of the Visual Arts in Canada
Howdy!
So Frederick Winston decided to republish the highlights from a kind of recent Heffel press release.
It also serves to re-show, reiterate, emphasize, and make you once again aware of how completely pathetic the Canadian Art Market is. Less than $3 million (including 17% buyer's premium) makes it the top seller! Jeez, imagine if Canadian companies were valued like Canadian art?

Geneviève Cadieux on YouTube
Howdy!
With Ms. Cadieux winning the Governor General's award, the Canada Council has decided to post a bunch of videos in English and French of her (and other people) talking about stuff. But it reminded me of this video, done by Karina Garcia Casanova a couple of years ago which almost made me pee my pants...

After watching this can you remember whogave gifted the crown to the museum? And what about the name of the artist?
And can't she talk for more than a minute about the piece?

The Stewart Hall Art Gallery hosted an artists' talk on January 16,2011 with Montreal artists John Stewart, Mark Garland and Jim Bell in conjunction with the exhibition Never Pure. John, Mark and Jim have been friends for years, a story that goes back to their days on Drolet Street. John, who was at that time showing at Waddington Gallery in Montreal, and Mark , then an art student, crossed paths and as they say the rest is history. When planning their exhibition at Stewart Hall, with director and curator, Joye Millar, they introduced her to Jim's work nd the result was a sound/video/sculpture exhibition in the Project Room. John Stewart begins the account of the full story of how they met and their friendship and collaboration over the years.

More on the Google Art Project
Howdy!
Back at the beginning of the month Google released their Art Project. I got all in a tizzy about it (and it also might account for why I haven't been so efficient lately). But what I forgot to point out was a nicely done article by Roberta Smith on and about it.

Date Night at the Met
Howdy!
Presented without commentary
I lied: Personally I agree with absolutely everything Nadja Hansen says, although I would be remiss if I didn't add that good lighting always helps on a first date, and while museums are good, vernissages can be better because they don't serve wine in the galleries of museums...

And, hopefully the last thing on stolen art for a while
Howdy!
This one you might have missed. About 10 days ago, three statues of Maurice Richard were stolen. According to the article they were the property of Canada Billiard and Bowling and worth about $9,000.
That's all fine and dandy, and was probably be gleaned from the police report. But what they don't mention is that the sculptures are miniature versions of a sculpture of Maurice Richard that is in a corner of Les Ailes de la Mode. Now that one is a behemoth, by my calculation it was the third of four statues of Saint Maurice to grace our town, and I could never figure out the how or the why.
But now it all makes sense, they (whomever made the sculptures) used the large version to legitimize the smaller ones which were then used to make money. I like it when everything fits into place.

Tom Hopkins died last weekend

I'm fairly certain that you read the news and saw the obituary, but you never know.
I will refrain (for the time being) from saying anything about his work...

The Google Art Project
Howdy!
If you use Google Street View (and I assume most of you do) life just got a little but better. Google has done the same thing, but this time for a bunch of museums. It's called The Google Art Project, and I, for one know that my productivity just declined by something like 1,000%

How long until the word "deaccession" gets translated into Quebecois?
Howdy!
Yesterday Kate of the lovely and wonderful Montreal City Weblog pointed me to this article by Nathalie Petrowski about how Loto-Quebec is dismantling a mural they commissioned by Serge Lemoyne.
While Ms. Petrowski does a fine job of parroting what the Serge Lemoyne Foundation told her, she neglects a much larger and significant problem. This is not the first time the product from 1% for art has been moved, dismantled torn down and destroyed. Ms. Petrowski seems to think that the Lemoyne mural is an isolated incident that might become a larger problem, when in fact it is business as usual, and it is only a matter of time before "the problem" becomes really significant and museums here start selling off bits of their collection or things worse...

With all this recent talk about art theft, it's nice to read a feel good story. Although if I were the woman in question I would have strong concerns about my dead husband's ethics or friends.
