Maureen Rappaport MD, FCCFP, Assistant Professor of Medicine, McGill University is a freakin' genius!
Howdy!
And I might even have to track her down for an interview one of these days. But I digress. she proposed that residents do an "Interdisciplinary Art Project." Previously she had done a creative writing course for doctors-to-be. And the results look spectacular.

Writing about expensive paintings
Howdy!
One of the New York Times' blogs asks Denis Dutton, professor of philosophy of art; Eileen Kinsella, editor of ARTnewsletter; Donald Kuspit, art historian and Kathryn Graddy, economist why things art is so expensive.
The only one I come close to agreeing with is Ms. Graddy.

Rachel Granofsky, making it big in San Francisco
Howdy!
According to this article in last Thursday's San Francisco Gate, Ms. Granofsky has been busy at Cellspace, and had an exhibit before finishing her residency. For those with short memories, Ms. Granofsky used to be staff photographer at the Mirror.

The Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowship in Contemporary Art
Howdy!
Last Thursday they announced the first winners of The Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowship in Contemporary Art. Congrats to Steven Bates and Véronique Savard.
However as some of you know, I'm not a big fan of prizes, and my main question would be if they won a two year fellowship "worth $55,000." Since when has it cost $27,500/year to go to Concordia for an advanced degree in Fine Arts?

I'd love to hear how this went (and who went, how much dinners cost, and what class they were seated in on the flight, among other things).

There's a lot of stuff to keep up with...
- Pierre and Isabelle just landed the L Hotel as a client, and do a very nice job documenting some of the art in the hotel.
- If you're in Paris, Paprika and Seripop are exhibiting examples of their work until July 24 at galerie Anatome.
- Carissa Carman won the Mechtronix World Corporation Graduate Award. Unfortunately the press release doesn't specify how much. Congratulations nonetheless.
- Got kids? It isn't exactly art, but it sure as shootin' looks cool. In honor of the 20th anniversary of the Canadian Space Agency they have mounted something called Cosmomania at the John H. Chapman Centre on the South Shore until August 15th.

Stamp Art, Artists' Stamps & Artistamps
Howdy!
The fifth paragraph of this article stated "The first exhibition of artist postage stamps occurred in 1974 in Canada." Which led me to this website. And then this article. And then finally, Tui Tui.
I'm obviously going to have to learn a lot more about stamp art and artists' stamps.

Yes, it's a mouthful, but this article from the San Francisco Chronicle explains how Patrick Bernier and Olive Martin, The Kahnawake Gaming Commission, The Ernest-Cormier Studio and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts all come together in the name of art.
It'll be interesting to see if they ever show it in Montreal.

The Canadian Art Market ain't so hot
Howdy!
I'm late on this one, but I'm slowly catching up, I promise. Last week an Agnes Martin painting [pdf alert] didn't hit the minimum, at Sotheby's (although this one did) nor did a Jeff Wall photograph when it went up for sale at Christie's.

What the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal should do next
Howdy!
Since the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal seems to be showing only rented shows for the foreseeable future, this is one I'd like them to pick up... and don't they already have an established relationship with The Hermitage?

Well it looks like we will finally get rid of the execrable exhibit Bodies. Bodies is execrable because they did not get permission to exhibit the corpses, they just bought them (possibly in bulk and at a discount) from the Chinese government. In its place they will be exhibiting some large-scale advertisement for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
What makes me giggle is that the company that is organizing this advertisement for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader also organizes exhibits for The American Backflow Prevention Association, The Tortilla Industry Association, and on the very same weekend they are doing both the Conference for Catholic Facility Management and The Jewish Community Centers Association Biennial Conference.

Howdy!
More reasons never ever to mess with the courts. According to this NYTimes blog post, Poster Boy Sentenced to 11 Months in Prison for Vandalism. For those of you who are not aware of who Poster Boy is, click here, or if you prefer in a more succinct manner "Poster Boy cuts up and rearranges subway posters."
Or even more succinctly, he's awesome. But due to what sounds to me like a bunch of Keystone Kop-like antics, he's going to Rikers for slightly less than a year.

Howdy!
If you haven't noticed, I have changed the focus of this here blog/podcast. Instead of only being an outlet for my rambles and rants about things artistic in Montreal, I'm also adding news and other information about art and artists in Montréal, Québec and the rest of Canada, for the most part stuff that is not covered by the mainstream press.
One of my favorite things about this new focus, is that it enable me to highlight things like this: Québec Hebdo, the free weekly distributed by Transcontinental in Québec City has a 700+ word article on Dolorès Plourde Duong - or more bluntly and plainly an article about 40% longer and bigger than any article/review/preview about an an artist in the mainstream press.

Off the record, Vernissage Alert
Howdy!
A new section, upcoming vernissages that you might want to go to. For the blokes and Squareheads in the house, a vernissage is the Québecois synonym for an art opening. The word vernissage comes from varnishing. In the 18th century (or earlier) when most painting was done in oil. Once a painting was done, it needed to be varnished, but then as now, varnishing was an extremely boring and tedious job. So, according to the story that I heard, a painter would bribe his friends to help him varnish his paintings, by offering them wine.
A little bit of wine, some friends, some varnish and Voilà! Instant Party.
The First One:
Gaétan Bouchard's exhibit Simplement dans ma cour is opening on May 15 at 1756 St-Olivier in Trois-Rivières.
And the Second One:
« Fire » at Ecto (880 Roy E, 3rd floor) with Fabesko, Peter Gibson, Carole Guevin, Tanya Johnston, Élise Lafontaine, Jaber Lutfi, Frédérick Ouellet, Marie Sylvestre and Nathalie Trépanier on May 27 at 17h.
